I wrote my first children’s storybook “The Adventures of Wee Tam - Chewy Captures Wee Tam” during the early period of lockdown. It is something I had wanted to do for around 50 years, since my school days in the Scottish Highlands, but had never found the time to do so. The characters are all-important and I genuinely believe they will appeal to a lot of children as they pursue their crazy antics. The Adventures of Wee Tam is a series of 6 inter-linked stories in which Tam and his gang of loveable friends travel the length and breadth of the UK, visiting family and relatives, but finding themselves in all sorts of problems with the local characters. As a brand new author, I am extremely proud of my achievement in self-publishing, it’s quite a tricky undertaking. I desperately want to move forward with the remainder of the series, but I also realise that there needs to be a demand behind production. At the moment, I am struggling to get the buy-in of any of the major retailers (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrison’, Asda and others); indeed even getting a response is nearly impossible. As a result, lack of exposure is my biggest challenge; I could live with knowing that the children, my target audience, don’t like the book or characters but not being able to reach them to let them judge is hard to take. However, those who know me know that I don’t give up easily and this is something I really want to pursue in the coming years.
The future of Wee Tam and his gang isn’t in the hands of the retailers who don‘t even have the manners to provide a response, it’s firmly in the control of the kids. What I am looking for is audience feedback, so for those who have bought the book for their children or grandchildren, please encourage them to tell me what the think; they can do this via Wee Tam’s shop. Thank you.
